Lily lives in Monroc Camp, about five miles outside Gulu in Northern Uganda. She is one of nearly two million people who have lived in IDP camps for as long as twenty years. These IDPs, Internally Displaced People, are refugees who haven’t crossed an international border. They have been chased from their villages by the conflict between rebels and their own government. Aid Africa has brought hope to Lily, her family and her neighbors in Monroc Camp.
Why were people living in refugee camps in Uganda? |
Aid Africa has taken Lily’s children to the hospital -- and her relatives children too, for treatment of what we call what we call MAD – Malaria, Anemia or Diarrhea.
Lily is in charge of our tree nursery at Monroc Camp. Much of Africa has been deforested by people cutting trees for firewood. Initially, Aid Africa bought about thirteen thousand bitter lemon tree seeds for root stock. Lily oversaw their planting and nurture and grafting them with Valencia oranges. We’ve added thousands of mangoes, eucalyptus and other native trees. Aid Africa has distributed 10,000s of orange trees and firewood to local people. Trees for the Future has delivered seeds and seedlings to expand our reforestation project. That’s very exciting!
