Emergency Food Program for Gulu Street Children
There is a crisis in Gulu where the Aid Africa office is. The whole country shut down suddenly a couple of weeks ago. There are no busses, cars or motorcycles with more than just the driver.
Many children who were in town suddenly had no way to return to their villages. And, of course, there are many homeless children in town, too. Some of them used to scrounge from the restaurants to get food and drink. But almost all the restaurants are closed and there is no food available for them.
They are starving!
Our friend in Gulu, Nancy Cardoza, is coordinating a feeding program for the children in Gulu. Here\’s what she posted on her FaceBook page:
Hi Friends! I and my organization are working with a member of the Gulu Lion\’s Club and with the Gulu Covid-19 Task Force to implement a feeding program for Gulu street children who have been especially hard hit during this quarantine. Please review the following and if you can help us with a donation of any size that would be terrific and so appreciative. God Bless and stay healthy!
Many of these children could have retuned back to their villages during the quarantine but because transportation, public and private was lock downed with very little warning these children are now stuck in Gulu, with no shelter and no food, making these children very vulnerable.
In order to help meet the needs of these women and the street children, NUWOCSI is teaming up with a member of the Gulu Lion\’s Club and as we have the permission of the Gulu Covid-19 Task Force we will begin a feeding program for up to 70 children for the next 21 days.
Our idea is to enlist some of the women in the Gulu Main Market kitchens and some local restaurants in preparing daily meals for these children. This will not only give a hot meal to a child but will also be giving some small incomes to these women and restaurants.
The cost per meal is 3,000 shillings or about 80 cents. The cost daily is $56 to feed 70 children, and for the next 21 days will be approximately $1200.
